According to a Bloomberg report on Sunday, Apple is working on a smart lock and doorbell system that would enable users to unlock their doors by scanning their face. The system may be compatible with third-party locks or offered as a complete product through a partnership with a lock manufacturer. However, the technology is still in its early stages and is not expected to launch until late 2025 at the earliest. Apple has not commented on these reports.

This development adds to Apple's expanding portfolio of home devices. Bloomberg recently reported that Apple is also working on an AI-powered, wall-mounted tablet resembling an iPad, which could function as a voice-operated intercom and smart home controller. Additionally, Apple has reportedly been exploring home robots. While not all projects may come to fruition—Apple scrapped its car project and a subscription iPhone model this year—the door device presents an opportunity for the company to integrate and cross-sell its ecosystem of products, including iPhones and Apple Watches.

If realized, Apple's smart doorbell and lock system would compete directly with existing products from Google and Amazon, such as Nest and Ring, which feature motion-sensor-activated cameras and video recording capabilities.
